The Mary Sarvis Memorial Fund (MSMF) began with a commitment from Dr. Mary Sarvis herself.
In 1965, a young man that she worked with had dreams of becoming a journalist. Unable to afford the tuition to continue his education, Dr. Sarvis promised to pay his fees. Unfortunately, she died before having the chance to fulfill this promise. In honor of her life and work, Dr. Sarvis’ friends opened an account in her honor, and donated the funds to support the young man through graduate school. Once the man graduated and began his work as a journalist, he repaid all of the tuition money he received into this same account–paying forward the generosity Dr. Sarvis offered him.
MSMF is a gift from the community, for the community–specifically to those most vulnerable members who feel trapped between its cracks.
MSMF provides “the next useful step” for a child, carrying forward the legacy of Dr. Sarvis’ tireless dedication to improving the lives of young people–one, small step at a time.
